Purpose of the role

As an Operations Graduate you will be joining the Operations Team on a 24-36 month varied and challenging programme, developing your skills and raising your strategic awareness, with the aim of becoming a key member of the site production team.

Key responsibilities of the role

To ensure we meet our customer requirements to deliver quality, fresh and convenient products, our operations functions is at the heart of our business, running 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Working within a fast paced and diverse environment, this role will be varied and at times challenging, requiring strong communication skills and confidence in your ability to work with and influence others. You will interact with multiple business functions and key stakeholders, where you will have the opportunity to influence key business decisions. 

Over your programme, you will rotate or learn across a range of departments at your operational site, such as planning, production, materials, logistics and technical; learning first hand from the high performance teams around you. You will develop an in-depth knowledge of production processes, quality controls and health and safety standards and grow your people management skills as you lead a team.

As a Graduate Engineer, you will initially work at one of our main processing sites where you will receive training and development to support your career aspirations through a comprehensive mentoring programme.
This training and development will comprise of both structured graduate development as well as specific technical training to support your role. Typically, after 12/18 months, you will move to one of our other sites to complete your broad induction into FMCG engineering.

Key responsibilities of the role

Your initial role will be either as a Principal Engineer or Project Engineer; this will rotate during your Engineering Graduate Scheme. During your Engineering Graduate Scheme, you will have engineering responsibility of an area within the operational environment where you will be the Asset Manager, monitoring downtime, organising Planned Maintenance, gathering data to analyse trends, conducting RCAs and FMEAs which will drive continuous improvement and reliability initiatives.

You will manage projects utilising proven, innovative or emerging technology solutions to solve operational problems and have an impact on operational performance within a FMCG environment. You will be trained in managing projects ‘the Avara Way’ and have opportunities to work and input into key operational projects as we continue to invest within our operations.

You will be mentored in identifying needs, planning solutions, sourcing funding/resources, tendering and delivering as well as developing the training and technical documentation. You will also have opportunities to mentor engineers, apprentices and STEM students, which all supports you in your own personal development.

As an Engineering Graduate, we want you to feel supported and inspired to be the best version of yourself and progress your career with us. Your training and development will comprise of both general graduate development, as well as specific technical training to support you in your role. We have a proven mentoring scheme to support your journey towards professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng); the company (subject to requirements) will pay your professional fees. You will also be supported with any required Level 7 (Masters level) qualifications needed for CEng status.

Job description:

As a newly recruited graduate, your role will oversee one of the business’ product lines, dealing with product flow, quality and customer demand. You will get the opportunity to manage a team of up to 25 people, develop their performance and work towards becoming a leader within the business. 

Your responsibilities will extend to running a production line, meeting line plans, minimising downtime, improving performance and efficiencies, whilst reducing costs where possible.  Melton Foods will support your professional development throughout your tenure, leading to new opportunities within the business including, but not limited to, progression towards Area Manager. 

The working shift patterns are as follows: 

Bakehouse- 6am – 2pm with your shift pattern Tuesday – Saturday. 

Highcare – 6am – 2pm with your shift pattern being either Sunday – Thursday or Tuesday – Saturday 

What we are looking for:

Academically, we are looking for CCC (or higher) at A-level and a 2:2 degree (or higher) from any discipline completed within the last 3 years. Our sites are often in rural areas of the UK and therefore it is a requirement that you have a Full UK Driving Licence in order to get to work and travel between sites. Due to the nature of the role you will be working in shift patterns. You will have strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
