Searching for a graduate job can be tough and a high-level of competition means it is harder than ever to stand out from the crowd. However, those that are able to show the right attitude and make an effort to improve themselves are much more likely to land that dream job.
New research from Course Library found that an impressive 85% of all participants would invest in additional training to boost their CV and career opportunities. The findings show that there is a growing realisation among job seekers that developing and improving skills has become massively important.
But what steps can a graduate actually take to improve their skills and experience in order to make their CV more attractive to employers?
Work experience and internships
The benefits of completing an internship or work experience are clear, as graduates who have had a taste of day-to-day life within a certain sector are in a much better position to be able to adapt to hit the ground running if given a full-time role.
Companies will usually have set internship dates, however getting in touch with employers personally can be a great way to jump ahead of the competition. Smaller organisations will more than likely jump at the chance to have an ambitious and motivated graduate working with them, even if it is just for a couple of weeks.
Online courses
The introduction of online courses means it is easier than ever to enhance your skillset – for example, you can develop your understanding of Microsoft Excel or even start learning a new language.
A desire to improve yourself will always be looked on favourably by employers, and can be a great talking point during interviews. Whilst many candidates may have sat back and waited to get lucky searching for a job, you can highlight how determined and pro-active you have been.
Volunteer
Soft skills are more important than ever within the work-place and volunteering can be a great way to learn how to work within in a team and improve your communication. Whether it’s spending a couple of days at your local animal shelter, or holding a fundraiser for charity, there are no shortage of opportunities.
